Ptosis is a condition that implies a low or “droopy” eyelid margin and leads to an obstruction in the field of vision. Ptosis results in a drowsy or sleepy appearance. This drooping of the eyelid typically worsens as the day progresses or as one becomes tired. A patient with ptosis may experience difficulty with reading, driving or experience a general decrease in the field of vision. Both children and adults may be born with or develop ptosis. There are a variety of causes of ptosis but it is most commonly due to a weakening or stretching of the inner muscles or ligaments of the eyelid. Some neurological conditions may be accompanied by ptosis. Ptosis differs from excessive skin that drapes over the eyelashes and the margin of the lid itself. Some people may have a combination of these conditions that result in an impairment of vision if the lid (or excess skin) overlaps the pupil.
The correction of ptosis involves a surgical repair that is generally performed under sedation by our ophthalmologist, Dr. Syed Ahmad, in the operating room. An incision is made in the upper eyelid similar to a blepharoplasty incision. The weakened or stretched ligaments are tightened, thus allowing the eyelid to return to its normal height. Most commonly dissolvable sutures are used to close the skin incision. Improved vision should be immediately apparent postoperatively and recovery is well-tolerated. Correction of ptosis can make a dramatic improvement in vision and appearance in allowing the person to appear more alert and awake and ultimately see better.
