What is a Mid Facelift vs a Traditional Facelift?

mid facelift

The mid-face is the area between your lower eyelids and the mouth – one of the most common areas of the face to show the signs of aging. Skin, tissue, and facial fat begins to sag, the jawline loses its definition, and jowls appear. Your lower eyelids can begin to look puffy and tired and deep creases appear, running from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds). Two different surgical procedures can restore the smooth, firm appearance of your earlier years – a traditional facelift and a mid facelift.

These two procedures are performed differently. A traditional facelift involves placing incisions within your hairline, near the ears. The mid facelift is a far less invasive procedure, as the incisions are placed within the eyelid to address the droop and sag of cheeks skin, fat, and the mid-face muscle structure, elevating your face from above, rather than from the sides – with smaller incisions and no visible scarring.

Which is the right procedure for you, a traditional facelift or a mid face lift?

A full evaluation of your facial structure and the extent of the wrinkles, lines, and sagging tissue and skin will reveal the most effective surgical treatment for you. A mid face lift can produce a remarkable improvement, and is often the appropriate treatment for men or women who are experiencing the visible signs of aging. Younger patients may not require a more invasive facelift surgery and can restore and rejuvenate the facial structure with an endoscopic procedure.

What is an endoscopic mid facelift?

Also called a “mini facelift,” an endoscopic facelift involves the use of advanced technology to lift the facial structure from above. A long, thin tube with a camera is used to view the inner structure of the face. Tiny instruments are used to tighten any sagging muscle tissue and remove fatty deposits to produce a firmer, more youthful look. This procedure does not excise (remove) excess skin – for patients with excess sagging skin, a traditional facelift will likely be the most effective treatment.

Mid Facelift: A Shorter Recovery Time

The recovery process is far easier after a mid facelift, as the procedure is less invasive than a traditional facelift procedure. The typical recovery time is typically about two weeks, with most patients feeling well enough to return to work after just one week. The outcome of the surgery is a significant improvement in facial appearance; the natural convexity and fullness of the face is restored, with the lower lids and cheeks looking as they did before gravity took its toll. The results are very natural in appearance, without a pulled, tight, or overdone look.

Choosing the Right Surgeon

Selecting the right surgeon for your procedure is extremely important. You need a cosmetic surgeon who uses the most advanced technology and the latest surgical techniques. Dr. Syed Ahmad is committed to producing excellent results and employing the most advanced techniques in facelift surgery. His background and education, as well as attention to detail and focus on producing natural-looking results in mid facelift surgeries, makes him one of the most sought-after mid facelift surgeons in the Plano, TX area, with countless patients coming from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Facelift FAQs

Do I need a traditional facelift or will a mid facelift make me look younger?

The first step in making a decision about a procedure is a personal consultation. Dr. Ahmad will evaluate your skin quality, the degree of skin laxity, and discuss what you hope to achieve. We have many “before and after” photos to help inform you about what to expect. Every patient we treat has a customized treatment plan, developed specifically to address the individual areas of concern, whether drooping cheeks, sunken eyes, facial creases, or lack of definition in the jaw. In a mid facelift, as the skin, tissue, and muscle structure is elevated from above, the results are very natural in appearance, simply restoring the area to the look it had prior to the facial structure starting to sag. Gravity pulled it down, and the procedure restores the facial tissue to a more youthful location.

Is a mid facelift able to resolve extreme wrinkling and sagging facial skin?

For older patients, or those who have more extreme skin damage from sun exposure with sagging neck and facial skin, heavy jowls, and more extreme sagging in the neck area, a mid facelift may not resolve all aesthetic problems. A mid facelift repositions the soft tissues in the cheekbone area. This procedure is typically appropriate for women (or men) who are in their 40s and are now seeing the visible signs of aging – but it has not progressed to extreme sagging and drooping. While a traditional facelift is a more invasive procedure, it is often the appropriate procedure in these cases.

Can I avoid visible scars with a facelift?

One of the many benefits of a mid facelift performed by Dr. Ahmad is no visible scars. The procedure does not involve large incisions or a long recovery time as is usual with a traditional facelift. You can expect to see a dramatic improvement in your facial appearance, without visible scars, and with a far shorter recovery time.

Is a mid facelift effective for facial reconstruction?

For patients who have an unusual facial appearance as a result of a birth defect, botched facial plastic surgery, or sagging eye or cheek area from Bell’s palsy, a mid facelift can produce a remarkable improvement. Dr. Ahmad can help you restore a more natural, pleasing appearance in facial reconstruction with his advanced surgical technique.

I’m afraid of surgery but want to look younger – what should I do?

While there are many non-surgical treatments to restore skin quality, such as a medical grade chemical peel to resolve wrinkles, lines, age spots and other flaws, it may require a surgical technique to create the improvements you envision. It is always advised that the least invasive method is used when possible; these more advanced surgical methods require less recovery time and less damage to skin and tissue. A mid facelift could be the solution that will give you the uplifted, fresh look of your younger years — and the surgical procedure is far easier on the body.

Is a mid facelift difficult to perform?

While many surgeons offer this procedure, there is no question that experience matters. The mid facelift has become more and more popular as many patients are seeking a very natural-looking improvement. The procedure used by Dr. Ahmad could be described as “revolutionary.” The procedure involves small incisions within the eyelids, through which the sagging muscles and fat are accessed – no visible scars, and a very natural result. You like exactly like yourself, just younger and more refreshed. Expect compliments.

Will my face look tight and pulled after a mid facelift?

The concept of a mid facelift has gained in popularity throughout the nation, partially because patients now want a more natural look. Gravity has pulled the facial tissue downward, and the procedure merely restores it to its natural position. This procedure leaves you looking like yourself, without the drooping cheeks and hollow-looking eyes that add years to your appearance. This procedure is often appropriate for younger patients who want an improvement that appears fully natural.
